defendant in front of judgeThis is the first post in a series which will discuss defending against second-degree felony charges in Austin and other Texas areas. I consider it important to write on this topic due to the fact that individuals often do not know what steps to take after they have been charged with a crime. This is especially true for individuals who have never had contact with the criminal justice system. It is important to understand, however, that the judge and the prosecutors will take such matters very seriously and that you must take steps to protect your rights. The first step in doing so is to retain an experienced attorney. If you or a family member are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a criminal defense lawyer.

I will be addressing a number of topics over my coming articles. Issues which I will discuss include:

  • Texas’ punishments for a second-degree felony
  • Charges stemming from indecency with a child
  • Defending against charges of sexual assault
  • Defending against robbery charges
  • Cases involving accusations of arson

I have chosen to address these particular topics for a number of reasons. First, understanding the potential range of sentencing is important to appreciating the gravity of one’s situation. Second, matters involving sexual allegations against children are ones with which prosecutors take an aggressive stance. The same is true for cases involving sexual assault. Third, robbery cases can involve a large number of issues. Such issues may include Fourth Amendment violations, improper eyewitness identifications, and more. These same issues can often exist in matters involving allegations of arson.

One point I will be stressing in each of these articles is the need to retain counsel as soon as possible if you or a loved one are facing charges. Second-degree felonies carry a potential prison sentence as well as a life of difficulty after one is released from incarceration. The sooner you retain counsel then the sooner they can begin building a defense on your behalf. I am an Austin criminal defense lawyer who devotes his practice to defending the rights of the accused. I have been practicing law since 1995 and I am Board Certified in Criminal Defense by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. If you are in need of assistance then contact my office today.
